At Vail Spa, we feel privileged to work and live in this beautiful Colorado mountain paradise and are dedicated to preserving it for generations to come. Our desire to preserve and protect our natural surroundings enhances the environment for all who live here and visit. Vail Spa is committed to being a sustainable business leader and reduce environmental impacts by engaging our owners, guests, employees and community through the use of responsible products and shared best practices. You might already know about some of the sustainable practices and projects we’ve taken on at Vail Spa over the years. These include:
•Purchasing sustainable, recycled and local products
•Installing programmable thermostats throughout common areas
•Modernizing elevator motors and the main air handler for the common spaces
•Switching to LED lighting in common areas including garages and fire stairs
•Installing solar panels on the roof to heat pools and common area domestic hot water
•Employees are encouraged to carpool or use public transportation (discounted bus passes) and receive up to 8 hours of paid volunteer time per year
However, you might not be aware of some of the additional programs we participate in and recognition that Vail Spa has received as a sustainable business.
Colorado Environmental Leadership Program We are proud to be recognized by The Colorado Dept of Public Health and Environment’s Environmental Leadership Program (ELP). This is our statewide environmental recognition and reward program. There are three levels: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Vail Spa has achieved the highest level of recognition as a Gold Leader since 2016.
Actively Green The Actively Green Program was launched in the fall of 2013 by Walking Mountains Science Center as an initiative of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek. Vail Spa applied immediately and we were the third business in Vail to receive certification! Actively Green offers a local, credible certification program and sustainability management system through partnership with the global non-profit Sustainable Travel International. The Actively Green standard is also “recognized” by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Impact Energy Active Energy Management Program For more than 10 years, Vail Spa has been working with Impact Energy to track and understand energy consumption in the Vail Spa building. Energy software has made it simple to track usage and provides detailed reporting that is immensely helpful to understanding our energy usage patterns. This year, we have moved from simple tracking into the Active Energy Management Program. Impact Energy will help us to identify low-cost or no-cost efficiency measures, assist with implementation and empirically measure the impact.
LED Light Bulb Swap Vail Spa has partnered with the Climate Action Collaborative to host an ongoing LED light bulb swap. Did you know that swapping just two old-tech light bulbs to LEDs will save $16/year on electric bills and cut 230 pounds of air pollution? So far we have swapped more than 75 bulbs!
Walking Mountains Business Recycling Challenge Vail Spa participated in the Walking Mountains Business Recycling Challenge this past fall. This thorough audit provided us with an action plan to increase recycling and reduce waste going to the landfill.
A huge thank you and congratulations to all of the Vail Spa guests, owners and employees who have supported our environmental initiatives and efforts to preserve and enhance our natural mountain environment.
